We have a friend who is here from Argentina named Tomas. He came here to get work and now is waiting for his wife and 2 children to come in the next couple of weeks. He has really been lonesome for his family, being here alone, so we had him and the Ede family, over for dinner and a birthday party for Tomas. I love to decorate for a party! After dinner, Tomas did a lesson for us. He passed around tea lights, and then read the scripture about letting your light shine, and not hiding it under a bushel. Then we turned out the lights and he lit one candle, and said that he'd like each one to share their testimony, and as they did, they would light their candle - because we share our light by sharing our testimony. It was so sweet. The little kids bore their testimonies. The 9 yr old, Cortney helped her little sister with her testimony. Then we played "don't eat Pete"!

A Great Party
Our Ashburton Branch had the best party/dance on Saturday night, at the Rakia Community Center. It started at 5:00, and everyone brought a "plate" (of food). There was plenty and it was all delicious. They (the branch presidency and wifes) had decorated the gym, and had a disc jockey, and everyone went in and danced. It was so much fun. Everyone danced - little kids, big kids, teenagers, young people and old people, and moms and dads with their kids! And they danced with everyone there, and everyone had so much fun. It was quite amazing to watch. At 10:00, people didn't want it to end! About 90 people came (only about 110 come to church!) About 20 were non-members. At church the next morning everyone was still excited and happy about it!
Zone Meeting with President and Sister Kezerian
Sister Yu and Sister Wu are our darling Sister missionaries. We love them too.
Everyone loves to do the "goofy" pictures!
The couple with us are the Elder and Sister Stauffer, from Bountiful, Utah. They are on a CES mission in Christchurch, and we get to see them every week when they come to Ashburton to teach piano lessons. We love them!

Big snow storm
It seems funny that it's summer time at home, and we have had snow and blowing (from the south!) and freezing cold here this week. This amount of snow has honestly shut the town (and most of New Zealand) down for 2 days. The post offices, the stores, the schools are all closed. They don't get snow here very often. We aren't afraid to drive in it - but are afraid of the other drivers who don't slow down when it's icy!
It did snow another few inches later after this picture, but it rained today and melted most of it. Everyone was pretty tickled to have snow. This is a picture of our friends (who own the house we rent), Val and Graham. Yesterday was Val's birthday! They are lovely people!

Why we're here!
These little black lambs are so cute! They are all black when they are born, and then their wool grows and it is white, but their faces stay black. (That's not why we are here! They are just cute!)
A month ago, Kenny ask Elliott, at home, to find and mail the template for the Book of Mormon reading bookmark, where you mark off the chapters when you read them. It finally came last week, (thank you Elliott!) and we went and got copies made and cut. We took them to church and gave a few (and then a bunch) to the branch president and told him how they have helped us. He showed them at Sacrament meeting and passed them out to the whole branch and explained how to use them. That was a week ago. Tonight President Pongia called and said that he had just gotten an e-mail from the stake president and President Ormsby had ask him to ask the branch to read the Book of Mormon by the end of the year! He called to say thank you for giving him the book marks last week, to prepare everyone for the stake presidents challenge. He said he knows we have been sent to help him. So sweet!Today we went to see a sweet sister and take a little birthday treat, and had such a good visit with her and her husband. She cried and said that she had been praying and knew that Heavenly Father had sent us to New Zealand to help her with problems. When we visit with people and feel like we can help or make a difference in their activity, it makes us feel like the Spirit is guiding us. We walk away and are so thankful we went to see them.
Last week the elders called and said when they were tracting, a little girl said that her grandpa loved the missionaries, so they gave her their phone number. Later the dad called and ask the elders to bring the "older people" with name badges (that he had seen at McDonalds!) and come and give his father, who was dying, a blessing. So we went to this Maori family's home, where the 77 yr old grandfather, TeIwikau "Joe", was in the final stages of terminal bone cancer -he was waiting for his children to all get there, to die. We found out that he was a member of the church, and that they had been sealed in the temple, when the kids were little, and then the parents separated and all became inactive. Kenny and the elders gave him a blessing, and a couple of days later he did pass away. Kenny took President Pongia to meet the family and they ask him to come to their house and do a funeral. They had Joe in the living room, on the floor, in a casket, with mattresses on both sides, so people could kneel down by him and visit with him. Everyone came into the room, and then several people told about Joe, and what a hard worker he had been, and that he was an amazing sheep shearer, and had been known all over the world for how fast, and how many he could shear. His brother told how he had looked after him and taught him to work. It was very sweet. President Pongia gave a wonderful talk and talked about the Savior and how he left the 99 and went and found the lost sheep. Then Kenny gave a sweet prayer. They were leaving the next morning and driving about 17 hrs with his body, to have a big Maori funneral in Auckland and bury him there where he was from. When we got home, we looked his name up on the internet, and he was indeed a master sheep shearer!
Kenny has looked up about the Mormons and the Maori connection and it was so interesting! Joseph F. Smith, when he was the prophet, said that the Lord had directed their course away from the American continent to their island homes, that they might not be left to be preyed upon and destroyed by the more wicked people. And that the islanders have been more highly favored and blessed because of the worthiness of their forefathers who were led away and separated from their brethren on the American continent.

Transfers
Today was transfer day. Our first experience with saying goodbye to elders that we have become very attached to. Didn't know we would feel so sad. Elder Fifita who has been here in Ashburton almost since we first came, is going to the north island, along with Elder Vaemolo, who has been in our district, is also going to the north island. We feel like we will be friends with these great elders forever. Elder Tebau is our new elder in Ashburton.Elder Murphy is our great district leader and will train our brand new Elder Heinricks, from Canada. He came in on a plane, and on the plane was the New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key! He had security men around him, but he was kind enough to stop for a photo with the elders and say a few words to them. He recognized that they were missionaries because of their badges!! It was a cool experience!
A good day
Last Sunday we had such a good day. Our new stake president, Pres. Ormsby, came to Ashburton (his first Sunday as stake president) and said he wanted to talk to our branch presidency and Elder and Sister Neider, after church. In our little meeting, he first read some scriptures about how the Lord can use us to cause miracles to happen in His work. He praised the branch presidency on the wonderful work that they are doing, and then he challenged the branch presidency to go the second mile, and increase their numbers to 150+ on a consistant basis, so that they can become a ward, within 1 year. He then ask, who had called Elder and Sister Neider on a mission? Everyone agreed, the Lord. Then, who has called them to Ashburton? Again, everyone agreed, the Lord. Then he said, the Lord has sent them to Ashburton to help you become a ward, and you need to utilize and let them help you - they aren't here to in anyway diminish or take away from what you are doing, but are here to help you. It gave us such a wonderful feeling, and helped us know more clearly what it is we are to be doing here.
When we were through, we invited Pres. Ormsby over to our house, to have a bite to eat before he started back to Christchurch. I had put a big roast in, and invited the DeOcampo family(from the Philippines), and Tomas (from Argentina), for dinner too. When we opened the door to our house - you could tell that the roast was burned - house smelled awful! Roast was shrunk up to nothing and nearly unedible! But we had plenty of new peas and potatoes and rolls and fruit salad, and they all insisted that the roast was cooked "just the way they like it"!! Pres. Ormsby's wife and children had gone up to Auckland, so he didn't have to rush, and he stayed and visited till 5:00. It was such a nice time, to have him here, along with our other guests! Then we were off to teach the temple prep class, which went very well also. A great day! I forgot to take pictures.
